I was driving my mom's 05 Explorer yesterday in traffic and it developed a misfire in cylinder 3. There was a sudden decrease in power and the car shakes violently at idle. I plugged in my scanner and managed to pull these codes from it P0171 (system too lean bank 1) P0303 (cylinder #3 misfire) and P0316 (misfire at startup) Does anyone have any Idea what may have caused this? What I've found so far is either plugs or wires, a vacuum leak or a clogged injector.

Probably coil/plug/wires... I just replaced those on my friend's 2005 V6 Exploder with 160K miles. It was setting codes and occasionally running rough... Sparkplugs were never changed and the gaps were burned out to almost 0.100". That's too wide for an old coil (or even a new one) to generate enough juice to spark across that air gap - especially at higher cylinder pressures. As a result, the coil degrades and since the energy in the plug wire is looking for an easier path than across the sparkplug gap, you get micro arcing/burns down the plug boots and to adjacent components.
Replace coil/plug/wires with good quality components and report back.

I know nothing about Explorers, but did you pull the plug? Could just be fouled, old.

What engine? V8, probably coil / plug. V6, probably plug / wire. Use motorcraft plugs. Fords are picky. Probably should do the fuel filter as well. All in all, nothing serious.

Which engine? 4.6 V8 or V6? Dad has a 04 Mountaineer basically all the same.

I've been trying to pull the plugs but I don't have a long enough extension to reach it my dad is bringing some spare tools tomorrow.

You have what pretty much every guy wants - an excuse to buy a new tool!

I have the tools they just happen to be located about 100 miles away from my current residence.

The codes you pulled could be related, maybe not hence why i suggested the fuel filter. But definately would try a spark plug / wires. Motorcraft plugs. The ford dealer i used to work at seen these all the time. Your engine has 1 ignition coil, the v8's had 8 (one for each plug). So i double the ignition coil is the culprit or you would have a code p0300 for random cylinder misfire or no start. It's not a hard job if you're a do it yourselfer. The fuel filter will probably be the biggest pain iif it's never been touched.
